Can Weighted Blankets Improve Creativity?

The benefits of using a weighted blanket to sleep are commonly ask, but creativity is not normally the answer that people give. But it is our answer!

Research has previously shown that sleep enables people to solve problems, as well as insight and flexible reasoning. This explains why a common answer to having a problem is “sleep on it”. The reason for this is because sleep and creative problem solving are connected.

This is not new information and has been studied for a while, however by using a weighted blanket you are allowing yourself to sleep better facilitating better reasoning and problem solving to occur.

SLEEP AND CREATIVITY

Recent research by a neuroscientist called Penelope Lewis highlights how memories are replayed in our minds when we sleep, explaining exactly how this relates to creativity. Lewis demonstrated that during slow-wave sleep (SWS) our brain is able to draw commonalities from our memories making a creative connection. During two different stages of the sleep cycle, non-REM and REM, the mid and outer brain, specifically the hippocampus and neocortex, are in close connection and this is essential in creative thinking.

Simply put, our brain creatively connects unrelated topics during non-REM sleep and these connections are then strengthened during REM sleep. This research by Lewis illustrates the importance of having a good night’s sleep, and why using a weighted blanket can help ensure these creative connections are made. A weighted blanket will help solve problems you might face, boosting your creativity the following day.

HOW ARE WEIGHTED BLANKETS HELPING TO UNLOCK CREATIVITY?

A weighted blanket is helping people to keep the composed rhythm of people’s natural body clocks in sync. This ensures a good quality sleep helping people feel strong and focused the following day, and allowing that person to perform creatively. Lacking sleep can lead to someone’s overall health suffering and this can lead to people’s creative thought being affected.

A weighted blanket helps by gearing our brains and bodies towards the optimal state for falling asleep, helping people to fall into a deeper and longer sleep.

BENEFITS OF SLEEPING WITH A WEIGHTED BLANKET

  • It is calming and this makes falling asleep effortless.
  • It helps to stay asleep for longer, with non-REM and REM stages of sleep being uninterrupted which is crucial for creativity.
  • You wake up happier after a long night’s sleep.
